Wiki Link for Iron Kitchen Recipes
Later in the semester we will hold an Iron Kitchen competition to see who is the best of the best in our class. Each kitchen will go up against each other and be eliminated one by one to see who is the Iron Kitchen of the class.
Here's a wiki link to post your groups recipe ideas you may find once we get closer to this competition which will be much later in the semester!

Google doc about baking
Google docs are a great way to give you information without using hard copy paper. Since classrooms are quickly becoming technology focused, I will begin using google docs as a tool to provide you virtual handouts. Hard copy handouts will still be avalable but if you lose it or are not in class this is where assignement links will be posted like the one below:
Using the google doc link open the link and read the definations and quesitons listed and define the remaining terms.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J6JRjs_UfzJ-GSQ38FAWi1PHJxHD1E70AlWQKFp3co4/edit
These will be used in a future exam.

An idea for blog use in my classroom
I hope to use this blog as a resource to house links for instructional aide in the class room and recipes to be used in class and to refer back to for later use at home. And, a tool for students to use if they miss a lab or class. We will use this resource throughout the semester and students may at any time get class information from past, present and future classes.
Tortillarilla!
This is a staple food item that can be used for SO much...so so so much. Lets start out by listing some things you can use tortillas in:
Ok that's alot of stuff tortillas can be used with, but just in case we missed a few here are some other examples:
Tacos
burritos
coated with cinnamon and sugar for a lovely dessert
fried for a puffy taco
baked crispy for a chip used in salads or dip
Here is a clip to help you see how to do what you'll be doing!
http://youtu.be/LEz0puaKNTk
And finally the recipe:
Flour Tortillas
3 and ½ cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
3.5 oz lard or vegetable oil (7 tablespoons)
1 cup HOT water
Combine all ingredients and knead for about 3
minutes. Cover with a towel and let sit
for a few minutes to rest while you get out and preheat your griddle between
5-7 (medium high heat), get out your
spatula, a plate to put cooked tortillas and a piece of foil to cover and keep
them hot.
Place 2 tablespoons of flour on your counter top;
sprinkle just a little on the surface you are going to roll out your tortilla
and dust the top of tortilla as you roll out.
Pick up and turn your tortilla as you roll out to keep the round
shape. Dust off excess flour and place
tortilla on hot griddle and use spatula to turn once bubbles form.

Housekeeping and Ms Chef, where's this? Where's that?
Everything you need for what you will make as far as food will be on the front round table.
Only get what the recipe calls for please. I've only placed enough for each group to have what they need so don't take from another man's kitchen and everyone will be happy and get plenty to eat. Ok...OK!
Most spices and flour are in your pantry.
For this lesson I want you to go to your KIT and write down everything in your pantry so you are all familiar with what you have. We will then compare with all of our kitchens to make sure we all have the same things.
Done?
Ok next we need to do a little housekeeping. It's our house, our kitchen so every class will be assigned a KIT duty. Over the break our kitchens have been sprayed for unwanted house guests (roaches, ants, mice...GROSS!!) So, that being said we need to wash things with HOT SOAPY water, rinse them with hot water allow to air dry for a bit, wipe down the area we have been assigned with a spray cleaner and dry with a clean towel what we washed and put them back.
Here's the list of duties assigned by class:
1A -All pull out drawers - wash all utensils and items in pull out drawers, wipe down and dry pull out drawers and replace items.
2B-All lower cabinets - wash all baking and cooking items used on top of stove, wipe down lower cabinets and replace all items.
3B-All upper cabinets - wash all plates, cups, bowls, mixing items, liquid measuring cups, wipe down all upper cabinets, dry and replace all items.
4B-All pantry cabinets and surfaces including tables - remove and wipe all pantry items, wipe down pantry, spray and clean all counter tops, stove tops, front of cabinets, stoves, sinks and wipe down all tables in class.
Tip top shape and ready to get cooking!!

Measure your treasure!
So when you go to get something your used to the grab and go method, this works for some things but not for cooking. If you want to repeat what you made you have to have a road map. Like a treasure map that leads to gold nuggets, there are steps you have to follow to get to where your going. Measurements are like that roadmap, 1 teaspoon of this, one cup of that, a 1/4 tablespoon of this and tada! X marks the spot to your sweet creation.
Use the following link to see how its done,
http://youtu.be/0v-ulU_mi7o
Now, tell me about something you've made in the past that required measuring and what ingrediants you measured and what you used to measure it with.
If you've never measured before, then tell me why you think it's important to measure properly and use the correct equipment to measure items.

This is our house!
And we're ready to lean about kitchen rules.
First our class motto:
"This is our house, these are our kitchens. Anything prepared by us, will be for us. So lets keep it clean and organized so we have what we need, when we need it!"
All kitchens are separated by colors. Everyone will be assigned a group and kitchen (aka, KIT!)
Kit 1 is red
Kit 2 is white
Kit 3 is blue
Kit 4 is green
Kit 5 is yellow
Kit 6 is black
Most if not all of your KIT equipment and pantry items (salt, flour, spices) are labeled with your KIT color. Keep your items in your KIT and everyone will be happy and have everything they need.
Stay in your KIT when we have labs please, your group needs you despite your cooking ability. If you all work as a small group you will get things done faster and have plenty of time to sit and enjoy your creation and have your KIT cleaned and back in order 5 minutes before the bell.
KIT equipment is separated into groups:
All pots and pans used on top of the stove are in one lower cabinet.
All baking equipment used in the oven are in one lower cabinet
All eating utensils are in one pull out drawer
All items used for baking and measuring are in one pull out drawer
All items used to aide you when cooking items on the stove are in one pull out drawer
All plates, cups, bowls and pitchers are in one upper cabinet
All mixing bowls, blenders, sifters, colanders and liquid measuring items are in one upper cabinet
Yup... that's a lot to remember but we will mark our KITS with labels to remember what goes where and all of your KITS have colored stars/tape to remind you which drawer and cabinet belong to your kit.
Now, lets get acquainted with our KITS and our group.
Remember,
"This is our house, these are our kitchens. Anything prepared by us, will be for us. So lets keep it clean and organized so we have what we need when we need it!"

How to read a recipe like a pro!
First things first. Now that you are familiar with what is in the kitchen, you have to know HOW to read a recipe. Reading a recipe is like me reading a highschool football play book. Sure I know the basic rules, but I don't know the signs, plays, or language used by the players. If I were to read a play book it would be completely foreign to me. So how can I learn to read a play book? I have to lean the terms, abbreviations and how a play book is set up.
Use the follwing links to read a little bit about how to read a recipe then give me your thoughts about what you already knew and what you learned.
